Course Description

All K12 educators should be able to effectively support special educational students in their general education classroom. Special education students come in all shapes and sides including general physical, mental or emotional disabilities as well as topic or subject specific learning disabilities. This course is a beginner course in the series of Special Education for all Educators from the Blended Schools Network.
In this course you will learn the foundations of supporting special education students in the general education classroom. Course participants will learn about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the process of creating Individual Education Plans (IEP) and creating SMART goals.
If you are a pre-service teacher, a new teacher going through orientation or have recently started working with special education students for the first time this course will prepare for provide a quality education for those students. By the end of this course you will be able to read an IEP and combine it's requirements with your knowledge of a specific student. This combination of special ed and general ed knowledge will allow you to create specific accommodations and modifications which allow all students to succeed in your classroom.
The course is structured in to three primary sections, Foundations of Special Education and IEP Boot Camp I and II. Each section consists of instructional videos and supporting readings as well as discussions and reflection prompts. At the end of each section will find a suggestion for a project that will allow you to solidify your knowledge of the topic using a real world situation.
Completing this course will provide with a new skill set that you can apply in your classroom immediately and also enhance your resume allowing you pursue greater challengers in your teaching career.
